Reference Checks

If a recruiter is doing a good and thorough job, you'll be asked for references and they will be
called. Here are some areas that a recruiter may cover in a conversation with your
references:

  • Does the candidate have the technical competence to successfully perform in the job?
  • Perceived level of intelligence?
  • People skills?
  • Level of motivation?
  • Work ethic?
  • Personality traits?
  • Dates of employment?
  • Job titles?
  • Salary history?
  • Strengths?
  • Integrity?
  • Accomplishments and successes?
  • Reason the candidate left their
    employment?
  • Areas in which the candidate can learn or improve?
  • If you had a relevant job opening, would you hire this person again?

Before you use someone as an employment reference, it’s wise to first ask their permission,
and to verify you have their accurate and up-to-date contact information.
